As a proud first-generation American whose parents couldn’t even dream of attending high school, let alone graduating college with a degree in science or engineering, I find myself fascinated by the recent digital donnybrook which erupted over the H1B Visa program.
The fight even featured some of President-elect Donald J. Trump’s most ardent supporters trashing each other using uncharacteristically vulgar language and insults.
The hostile exchanges only abated after an indirect intervention from President Trump declaring his support for the H1B Visa program.
Anyone rushing to claim victory on behalf of the side mocking American culture as a justification for the H1B program, makes a gross miscalculation.
Or soon to be nation's 47th commander in chief is justifiably considered perhaps the most ferocious, passionate advocate, and protector of the American worker in our nation's history.
Mr. Trump will not ignore the fact that far too many highly educated, competent, and hardworking Americans have been locked out of the American Dream because of the implementation of this program.
In theory, every rational, logical person should support the premise of the H1B Visa program. If our country doesn't have workers who possess certain skills necessary for a business to be successful, of course we should welcome foreign workers with open arms.
In reality, the H1B program has been grossly abused and its primary function has mutated, allowing big business to fast track replacing American workers with foreigners willing to do their jobs --- for less money.
This past October a jury recommended punitive damages against a large firm after finding that it "discriminated against non-Indian workers to prefer H-1B holders."
Unfortunately for the scoundrels who've been manipulating and defrauding this program for decades, the party is about to end.
And for that result, they have only themselves to blame.
While it seems that they should have been happy with discreetly lobbying for the status quo on this issue, their avaricious crusade for no restrictions, catapulted this issue to the forefront of the news cycle.
Sometimes, a funny thing happens when highly intelligent people (even geniuses) heatedly arguing with one another, actually manage to lower the temperature.
They find common ground.
If you’re looking to game the H1B system, you’ve been dealt a crushing blow when Elon Musk, the most powerful supporter of the H1B visa, publicly states that the program is "broken" and needs "reform."
Elon Musk makes a valid point about wanting to bring the best and the brightest to the United States, although the H1B program need not exist for this reason.
If a company legitimately can't find someone in the United States, why shouldn’t they be allowed to hire someone qualified who is living abroad? Let’s not placate the radical left and confuse MAGA with the xenophobic Know Nothing Party
Despite the arrogant imprecations against American culture by various opportunists, the United States is still the greatest country globally.
We are hard-working and innovative, because we are each unique, and not occupational or governmental automatons.
To elaborate on this point, for my Uncle Louis, his native land will always have a special place in his heart.
Make no mistake, he loves America more than anything.
He journeyed here without a high school, college, or a post-graduate degree, yet he is without a doubt one of the most intelligent people I've ever known.
Uncle Louis came here married and raised a family.
He established several successful businesses creating dozens of jobs, all while serving as a role model and mentor for countless others, natives, and immigrants alike.
Years back, he introduced me to another immigrant who didn’t have much of an education, who also came here with nothing and raised all of his children to become engineers and scientists.
That is what the American Dream is all about.
Immigration is about strengthening our country by bringing people who will contribute to making American stronger and more prosperous.
- What kind of immigration do we want?
- What are the criteria we should be looking for in prospective American citizens?
Character and work ethic should be the most sought-after qualifications in any job applicant. Those who are invited and welcomed to our country should be the most highly likely to become loyal Americans who will love and cherish America.
"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free," must never be replaced with whoever the tech oligarchs think will improve their bottom line.
Despite the dreadful economic and social engineering policies of the Obama/Biden administrations, American exceptionalism remains alive and well.
For all the misplaced sports analogies about bringing superstars to America, the bizarre analogies about "geniuses" versus DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), or these downright weird attacks against whites, America is so much more than a business opportunity for a venture capitalist, or a tech company.
America is, as Ronald Reagan so elegantly declared years ago, "the last best hope on earth."
It’s time we started acting like it.
