The race for outgoing Maryland Democrat Sen. Ben Cardin's seat is deadlocked between the Democrat and GOP candidates, according to a new poll from AARP released on Tuesday.
Republican former Gov. Larry Hogan and Democrat Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks are tied in the survey, which found that about 8% of voters in the state remain undecided on the race, or are voting for an alternative candidate:
- Hogan: 46%
- Alsobrooks: 46%
- Other or undecided: 8%
Notably, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democrat presidential nominee, is leading the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump, by about 30 percentage points in the state when including independent and third-party candidates, according to the same poll, which was conducted before Robert F. Kennedy Jr., announced that he was suspending his bid for the White House:
- Harris: 59%
- Trump: 29%
- Kennedy: 5%
- Jill Stein: 1%
- Chase Oliver: 1%
- Undecided: 5%
AARP noted that Hogan did particularly well among voters ages 50 and older, while Alsobrooks leads with voters ages 49 and under.
“Voters 50 and older are the biggest and most enthusiastic voting bloc in this election, and their votes will make the difference in the tight U.S. Senate race this year,” Hank Greenberg, AARP's Maryland state director, said in a press release.
The bipartisan polling team comprised of Fabrizio Ward and Impact Research conducted the survey on behalf of AARP, interviewing 1,258 likely voters from Aug. 14-20, with a margin of error of +/- 5 percentage points.
