Dems Turn on Biden: 11-Point Approval Drop in One Month

By    |   Thursday, 26 October 2023 04:31 PM EDT

United States adults registered as Democrats are turning their backs on President Joe Biden, with his approval dropping 11 percentage points to a record low in one month.

A new Gallup Poll conducted between Oct. 2 and Oct. 23 found that 75% of Democrats approved of the president in October, while that number was as high as 86% in September.

While Biden's approval also dropped among all adults and independents, it was less pronounced. He had a 4-point drop with all adults, from 41% to 37%, and the same amount among independents, 39% to 35%.

Axios noted that Biden's collapse with his own party might be related to his support for Israel, which is preparing for a ground invasion of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip in retaliation for the group's Oct. 7 massacre.

A recent survey conducted by Marist College and commissioned by NPR and PBS News found that a slight minority of Generation Z and millennial Democrats, 48%, supported Israel. Another 12% opposed the state.

That is compared to 86% of those in the silent and greatest generation and 83% of baby boomer Democrats who backed Israel. Among those groups, the number that opposed Israel outright was negligible.

Some progressive Democrats including Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota have publicly expressed issues with the president's current handling of the war in Gaza.

"Israel just bombed the Baptist Hospital killing 500 Palestinians (doctors, children, patients) just like that," Tlaib wrote on X, formerly Twitter, in response to the explosion at Al-Ahli Arab Hospital, which has not been confirmed to have been done by Israel.

"This is what happens when you [Biden] refuse to facilitate a ceasefire & help de-escalate," she continued. "Your war and destruction only approach has opened my eyes and many Palestinian Americans and ... [Muslim] Americans like me. We will remember where you stood."

Tlaib's comments drew ire on both sides.
