Economist Poll: Trump, Biden Tied

By    |   Tuesday, 09 April 2024 05:17 PM EDT

The race between President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump is in a dead heat, according to a new survey.

A new Economist/YouGov poll had the two candidates tied with 43% among registered voters, with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. trailing with 2%. Only 6% of voters remained undecided.

The poll surveyed 1,813 people from March 30 through April 2 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2%.

Trump leads Biden 50% to 37% among white voters, with Biden ahead 73% to 13% among Black voters. Biden leads in voters ages 18 to 44, while Trump leads among older voters, including a 10-point lead among voters 65 and older.

Crucially for Trump, he leads Biden with independent voters 39% to 36%, with 13% of voters undecided. Overall, Biden remains underwater with voters, with a 40% approval rating and 57% of voters disapproving.

When it comes to the election, Biden supporters said they are voting more against Trump rather than for Biden by 52% to 46%, while Trump supporters said they are voting for Trump rather than against by Biden 67% to 32%.

Only 15% of those surveyed said they were "enthusiastic" about Biden, while 42% said they were "upset." While Trump generated more enthusiasm at 25%, 45% of voters said they were upset.

Among possible vice presidential picks for Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina received high marks from voters, while many voters were not sure about Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem.

When it comes to Kennedy's vice-presidential pick, Nicole Shanahan, most voters shrugged, as 74% said they did not know the Silicon Valley lawyer and entrepreneur. Only 7% of voters approved of her, while 19% disapproved.
