Neil Patel, who was a chief policy adviser for former Vice President Dick Cheney during the Bush-Cheney administration, could be in line to work with Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, in the White House, according to CNN.
Kushner offered Patel the role informally, but they have agreed to discuss details at a meeting first. Kushner is a senior adviser to his father-in-law.
Republicans told CNN that Patel is "extremely smart and capable" and "a serious policy person."
After his job with Cheney, Patel became co-founder of the conservative news blog The Daily Caller, along with his college roommate, Fox News host Tucker Carlson, according to CNN.
On Monday, Trump said Kushner could lead efforts to make peace in the Middle East. "He'll make a deal with Israel that no one else can," Trump told a German newspaper, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
