While Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau enjoys a ski holiday, the majority of his own caucus are urging him to step down to "maintain some dignity," Politico reported on Tuesday.
On Monday, a poll released from Angus Reid Institute found that Trudeau's Liberal Party is only pulling 16% support from the Canadian pubic, a historic low for the reigning faction in power. The vanishing approval from the electorate has many in Trudeau's caucus openly calling for him to step down in the midst of the upcoming election and the return of President-elect Donald Trump.
"Prime Minister Justin Trudeau no longer has the support of caucus, and to maintain some dignity, he should immediately tender his resignation," Calgary lawmaker George Chahal wrote in a Dec. 27 letter to the caucus.
Tensions have risen within the Liberal Party in the aftermath of Trump's victory and his threat of massive tariffs, in addition to the exit of Chrystia Freeland as deputy prime minister and head of finance.
During a virtual meeting, 51 Liberal members of Parliament from Ontario discussed Trudeau's impact on the party in which the consensus was for the prime minister to resign. "We've reached a breaking point," said one who attended the meeting and was granted anonymity to speak freely. "There's a critical mass now that has been reached and that was not in place before."
Trudeau is said to have been contemplating his next move while he remains in British Columbia until Jan. 6. The prime minister has led his party since 2013, yet in the years since the COVID-19 lockdowns, his popularity has plummeted. Regardless of what his Liberal caucus may advise him, the decision will ultimately be his to make.
"His thinking right now is less about his political legacy," the senior Liberal source said, and more about "leaving the party in the best shape as possible" and ensuring there's a plan in place.
