Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., went on the offensive Tuesday against the Trump administration for the "outrageous" delay of a scheduled congressional briefing on the Israel-Iran ceasefire that was announced by President Donald Trump on Monday.
The Hill reported that Minority Leader Schumer met with reporters in Washington and said the two-day delay in the meeting was unacceptable. "This last-minute postponement of our briefing is outrageous, it's evasive, it's derelict," he said.
Schumer chastised the administration for "bobbing and weaving and ducking." He said a show of respect would be a good thing.
"Senators deserve full transparency. There is a legal obligation for the administration to inform Congress about precisely what is happening."
Senators were set to hear from three top administration leaders about a range of topics surrounding the conflict and the arrangements involved in the ceasefire that Trump announced.
Schumer said the meeting should have continued as scheduled with a later meeting to hear additional information from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who were unable to be in Washington for the Tuesday briefing.
The delay, he said, "undermines the very principles of accountability and oversight that safeguard our democracy."
Schumer said it is not unlike the call he got from an administration leader in advance of the military being ordered to strike targets in Iran. "They called me up and said, 'We're taking imminent action, we can't tell you what country.'" Schumer said he prodded for details, but was given none. "That's the extent of the briefing I've gotten," he added.
The ceasefire announcement followed Trump's direct military strikes against Iran on Saturday after Israel targeted Iranian military and nuclear weapon production facilities beginning on June 12 over failed negotiations with Iran to abandon its nuclear program.
