Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson called President Donald Trump "a monster" after his administration opened an investigation into the mayor's hiring practices.
The Department of Justice sent Johnson a letter this week announcing an investigation into his office's hiring practices following his comments during a public appearance at a local church on Sunday.
"There are some detractors who will push back on me and say, You know, the only thing the mayor talks about is the hiring of Black people. No. What I'm saying is when you hire our people, we always look out for everybody else. We are the most generous people on the planet," Johnson said at the time.
The letter specifically noted these and other remarks made during his appearance at the Apostolic Church of God in Woodlawn as reasons for opening "an investigation to determine whether the City of Chicago is engaged in a pattern or practice of discrimination" when staffing positions.
Johnson, in a press conference on Wednesday, called Trump "a monster" and accused him of being "threatened by" the diversity in his administration.
"As far as, you know, the president's animus toward women, people of color, working people, we have always known who he has been," Johnson said. "This is not a surprise. He's a monster."
"We have the most diverse administration in the history of Chicago, and he is threatened by that," he added.
"You can tell when someone is fearful is because they act out," Johnson continued. "We have a president that is screaming and having tantrums right now because we have an administration that reflects the city of Chicago, but he would much rather have administrations that reflect the country club. Period."
Trump "is most comfortable around people who think and look like him," Johnson added.
