President-elect Donald Trump said Monday he is nominating Joseph Nocella Jr., a Nassau County District Court and Family Court judge, to be the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
"Judge Nocella has a strong record of bringing Law and Order to the incredible people of New York, serving as a Nassau County District Court Judge, and Family Court Judge," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. "A proud graduate of Columbia Law School, he has also spent over ten years in private practice.
"Judge Nocella previously served as a law clerk to the Honorable Lawrence M. McKenna, United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. He was also an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York from 1991 to 1995."
If confirmed by the Senate, Nocella would replace Breon Peace, who was appointed by President Joe Biden. The U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York is responsible for all federal criminal and civil cases for a district of more than 8 million people in the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, and in Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island.
Nocella was appointed a Nassau County District Court judge in 2022 and was elected to the position that November, according to Newsday.
"Thank you President Trump for making this important appointment," said Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who appointed Nocella to the bench, in an email to Newsmax. "Joe Nocella is a seasoned prosecutor with great integrity and will be a valuable asset in fighting crime and protecting the homeland."
