DOJ Watchdog: FBI Ignored Key Clinton Email Evidence

By    |   Monday, 21 July 2025 03:10 PM EDT

The Department of Justice has released a watchdog report, previously held back as classified, that shows the FBI under President Barack Obama failed to review all available information about the private email server used by his secretary of state, Hillary Clinton.

The Office of Inspector General's internal review of the investigation, now referenced as the "Clinton Annex," indicates the FBI overlooked key evidence in its Clinton probe, including several unexamined thumb drives.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said in a release,
"This document shows an extreme lack of effort and due diligence in the FBI's investigation of former Secretary Clinton's email usage and mishandling of highly classified information."

Grassley argued that the FBI's "perhaps intentional lack of effort" in scrutinizing Clinton's communications starkly contrasts with the aggressive approach then-FBI Director James Comey took in pursuing what Grassley called the "Trump-Russia collusion hoax," which relied on the unverified and now-discredited Steele dossier. He said Comey's decisions reflect a clear pattern of political bias.

The Department of Justice on Monday said it was following through on earlier and repeated requests from Grassley to reveal all that was known about Clinton's private email server.  Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a release that the DOJ was compelled by Grassley to release the document showing the "mishandling of highly classified information during [Clinton's] tenure as Secretary of State."

Comey announced in July 2016 that, following the FBI's review of Clinton's email server, "no charges are appropriate in this case."

The Senate Judiciary Committee release on the newly released report pointed out that just weeks after clearing Clinton, Comey began what the committee described as "the bogus Crossfire Hurricane investigation into President Trump's disproven collusion with Russia."
