Minority Leader Jeffries Blasts Republicans Over Cuts in Budget Bill

By    |   Wednesday, 21 May 2025 12:54 PM EDT

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is fighting back against the budget bill proposed by Republicans, claiming it will hurt children, seniors, families, women, people with disabilities, and veterans.

The New York Democrat proposed an amendment designed to block the bill while testifying before the Rules Committee.

"If enacted, the GOP Tax Scam would represent the largest cut to healthcare in American history and the largest cut to nutritional assistance in American history in order to provide the largest tax breaks to billionaires like Elon Musk in American history," said Jeffries.

In his testimony, Jeffries said the cuts were un-American, calling them "unacceptable" and "unconscionable."

"America is the wealthiest country in the history of the world," Jeffries said. "We are better than this. We are here today discussing a bill that would make [the] American dream harder to reach for millions by increasing costs for families, hardworking American families, and gutting the things that they need to survive and thrive."

Jeffries charged the Republican budget bill will cause 14 million people to lose their health coverage and cause millions to pay more in copays, premiums, and deductibles.

"Hospitals will close, nursing homes will shut down, and people will die in all of your districts," Jeffries said.

The minority leader said cuts to SNAP will mean people will struggle to eat and get access to the nutrition they need.

"SNAP is a vital part of providing opportunity for our farmers who we stand with, food makers, small businesses, truckers, independent roasters, and the entire supply chain," Jeffries said.
