Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders surprised more than a few people when he posted a clip from influential podcaster and comedian Joe Rogan, who said U.S. healthcare "100% should be socially funded."
Sanders said, "Joe Rogan is absolutely right about this." According to Newsweek, the Senator's post quickly went viral, with well over 700,000 views, 11,000 likes and more than 500 shares.
The clip was from the March 21 Rogan episode, where he expanded on the idea. "I think that Medicare and Medicaid, having programs where people who are hurt can get an operation and it's not going to bankrupt them for the rest of their life is another thing that I think society should be."
Rogan said the cost of healthcare should be a shared experience for all Americans. "It should be a part of our agreement to take care of each other as a community, that we chip in money for what people would think of as socialist positions."
The Sanders post about Rogan's comments has a wide range of pro and con comments. Sanders has been an advocate of government-managed healthcare for years, with his website displaying his overriding position: "Create a Medicare for All, single-payer, national health insurance program to provide everyone in America with comprehensive healthcare coverage, free at the point of service."
