Henry Winkler wouldn't give President Donald Trump his thumb's up on Saturday, saying the nation's leader thrives on applause and appreciation from the public.

“I do believe that he is completely self-possessed or obsessed, and it’s very interesting," Winkler, who became famous for his starring role as Fonzie in the sitcom "Happy Days," told MSNBC's Hugh Hewitt. "His life’s bread, his life’s blood is the sound of appreciation, or adulation."

Winkler said he also thinks Trump blocks out criticism through a "veneer" that he's created.

"Donald Trump has imposed a veneer that keeps him like he’s in bubble wrap, like he is not connected to, or doesn’t have the empathy to be connected, and has created this thing where do we love to hate him?" said Winkler. "I don’t love hating him because I wish it was different.

He only does what is good for the moment."

Winkler also said he feels sorry for Trump's chief of staff, retired Gen. John Kelly.

"Eventually the job is going to beat him over the head until he bleeds from his skull," he told Hewitt.

The former "Happy Days" star, who had been a strong supporter of former President Barack Obama, described former Republican Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush as "charming and lovely."
