Democrat George Whitesides has defeated incumbent Rep. Mike Garcia, R-Calif., in the 27th Congressional District race, Newsmax has projected.
Incumbent Garcia, 48, lost by just over 2 percentage points and trailed Whitesides by around 7,000 votes.
Garcia, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and Georgetown University, served in the U.S. Navy from 1998-2012 and conducted multiple combat missions during the Iraq War.
Whitesides is a former NASA chief of staff.
The House majority stands at 219-210 with six races still too close to call. Republicans lead in three of them:
- California (five seats): Districts 9, 13, 21, 45, and 47. Republicans lead in Districts 13 and 45.
- Alaska District 1: Republican Nick Begich leads incumbent Rep. Mary Peltola, D-Alaska, in a ranked-choice voting state that would flip a seat to the GOP.
