Senate Republicans have targeted Democrat Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff, who is Jewish, for not responding to the Sunday Colorado terror attack as "more of the same & shameful."
In a Monday post on X, the National Republican Senatorial Committee asked why the silence. "Jon @ossoff's silence on the antisemitic terror attack in Colorado yesterday is unacceptable. He is once again failing to be a leading voice against antisemitism when it matters most."
While so far silent on the Bolder, Colorado, firebombing attack on a group trying to raise awareness about Jewish hostages still held by Hamas, Ossoff was quick to respond to a terrorist gunning down a young Jewish couple at a museum in Washington, D.C. on May 21.
Ossoff's positions relating to Israel have taken him out of the good graces of many Jewish leaders. In February, The New York Times reported that a group of leading Democrat Jews in Georgia turned to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in an attempt to recruit him to challenge Ossoff in the 2026 election. Kemp initially indicated he would not take that route.
The Associated Press reported in early May that Ossoff's work in the Senate has led to regular criticism from Republicans, not just Democrat Jews. Republican political consultant Dan McLagan said, "Ossoff's far-left politics only worked in specific moment of GOP chaos."
He said that once in office, Ossoff created his image problem. "Now it's like he's showing up at a Lee Greenwood Fourth of July concert with a 'Free Palestine' sign and a Che Guevara T-shirt. Everyone has already seen him," he said, "and it's too late to change his clothes."
