When Karen Bass was campaigning in 2021 to be the mayor of Los Angeles, she vowed not to travel abroad, The New York Times reported.
In October 2021, Bass told the Times she "would not travel internationally."
"The only places I would go," she added, "would be D.C., Sacramento, San Francisco, and New York, in relation to LA."
However, on Tuesday, as California Gov. Gavin Newsom was issuing a state of emergency for the fire that was spreading in the Pacific Palisades-Malibu area of Los Angeles, Bass was in Ghana, attending the inauguration of its president, John Dramani Mahama.
The Times reported that Bass made at least four other trips outside the United States before her visit to Ghana.
She traveled to Mexico for President Claudia Sheinbaum's inauguration. And she traveled to France thrice for the 2024 Olympic Games.
