Texas' Paxton Ties US Senate Race Exit to Voting Bill Passage

By    |   Thursday, 05 March 2026 03:57 PM EST

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said he would consider dropping out of the state's U.S. Senate race if Senate leadership agrees to abolish the filibuster and pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE America Act, a measure he described as critical to advancing President Donald Trump's agenda.

In a post on X, Paxton framed the legislation as a top priority and said he is committed to helping Trump secure its passage.

"The Save America Act is the most important bill the U.S. Senate could ever pass, and I'm committed to helping President Trump get it done," Paxton wrote.

Paxton is challenging incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in a Republican primary runoff election scheduled for May 26 after neither candidate won a majority of the vote in the initial primary.

"I would consider dropping out of this race if Senate Leadership agrees to lift the filibuster and passes the SAVE America Act," he wrote.

Paxton criticized Cornyn, accusing the longtime senator of refusing to support eliminating the Senate's 60-vote threshold for most legislation.

"John Cornyn is a coward who has refused to support abolishing the filibuster to pass this bill. Now, Fake News reporters and the establishment are trying to destroy me with misinformation," he wrote.

"The truth is clear: No one has been more loyal to Donald Trump than me—fighting the stolen 2020 election, being in Mar-a-Lago when he announced his 2024 campaign, and standing with him in NY in the face of lawfare."

Paxton reiterated his commitment to advancing Trump's policy agenda.

"For the good of our country and for the good of passing President Trump's agenda, I am determined to help him get this done," he said.

Trump weighed in on Paxton's Senate bid after being told the Texas attorney general said he would not leave the race even if Trump endorses Cornyn in the Republican primary.

"Well, that's bad for him to say," Trump said. "That is bad for him. So maybe, maybe that leads me to go the other direction."

Paxton launched his Senate bid in April 2025, setting up the high-profile Republican primary against Cornyn, who has served in the Senate since 2002 and previously held GOP leadership roles.
