On Thursday, the judge overseeing Kilmar Abrego Garcia's case ordered the Trump administration to comply with rules banning public statements that could influence the jury, according to Court Listener.
In the order, U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw granted a "motion and memorandum of law in support of issuance of order requiring compliance with local criminal rule 2.01."
The rule prohibits all court personnel, as well as U.S. Marshals Service employees and contractors, from disclosing information to any person about a pending proceeding unless authorized by the court. The rule specifically prevents the disclosing of information about arguments and hearings held in chambers or otherwise outside the presence of the public.
Abrego Garcia, who was deported to his home country of El Salvador in March and then returned to the U.S. for federal prosecution, remains in a Nashville jail as he awaits his trial on human smuggling charges. His hearing is set for July 16.
