The anti-Trump Lincoln Project has written a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland requesting the Department of Justice open an investigation into former President Donald Trump and his alleged promise of a Cabinet appointment for Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
"Today we formally requested that the DOJ open an investigation into Trump," The Lincoln Project posted on X Friday. The organization wants the agency to discern whether Trump violated federal law "by promising to appoint, or support for appointment, RFK Jr. to a public office in exchange for his endorsement."
On Aug. 14, The Washington Post reported that according to Kennedy campaign officials, the then-independent presidential candidate had sought a meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris to discuss the possibility of serving in her administration — perhaps on her Cabinet — if he were to endorse her, but she did not respond.
Following Kennedy's endorsement of Trump last week, there was intense media speculation that Kennedy had shopped his support to both Trump and Harris in exchange for a position in either administration. At Trump's Aug. 23 rally, the Republican nominee said he could see Kennedy on a new federal panel on chronic disease.
The Lincoln Project's letter does not offer any specifics but notes "contemporaneous allegations, unconfirmed but investigable, suggest that at some point Trump offered RFK Jr. a public office in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services."
The precise language of one of the laws in question states: "Whoever, being a candidate, directly or indirectly promises or pledges the appointment, or the use of his influence or support for the appointment of any person to any public or private position or employment, for the purpose of procuring support in his candidacy shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both."
The Lincoln Project is an activist group started in 2019 by individuals claiming to be disenchanted Republicans whose sole purpose for existing is to "protect the American Republic from Donald Trump and those who identify (publicly or privately) as MAGA supporters."
