AG Garland Condemns 'Horrific Attack' on Trump, Rally

Attorney General Merrick Garland is condemning the "horrific attack" at the Butler County, Pennsylvania fairgrounds after Saturday's assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.

"My heart is with the former President, those injured, and the family of the spectator killed in this horrific attack," Garland said in a statement Saturday, adding that the Justice Department "will bring every available resource to bear to this investigation."

The FBI has identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania as the suspect in the rally shooting, in which Trump was shot in the ear. One attendee at the rally died, and two spectators were critically injured.

The Secret Service killed Crooks, who was atop the roof of a building near Trump's rally stage.

Garland said Saturday he had been briefed about the shooting and had briefed President Joe Biden as well.

"The FBI, ATF, U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and the Department's National Security Division are currently working with the Secret Service as well as state and local law enforcement partners on the ground in Butler, Pennsylvania,"

The FBI said that it is still working to determine the motive behind the shooting.
