Former Vice President Mike Pence was shut down early in the first GOP presidential primary debate in Milwaukee on Wednesday night while trying to defend the Trump administration's record.
Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., was responding to Fox News' Martha MacCallum, noting that he voted for spending bills of $4.4 trillion, $4.1 trillion, and $1.7 trillion during the Trump administration.
"No doubt during the Trump administration, when we dealt with the COVID virus, we spent more money," Scott said. "Here is what happened at the end of our time in the majority. We had low unemployment. Record low unemployment: 3.5% for the majority of the population. Seven-year low for women, African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians had an all-time low. But our inflation was at 2%.
"Under Joe Biden, we have seen the exact opposite. We have seen inflation explode which led to 12 federal reserve increases devastating homebuyers today."
As co-host Brett Baier prepared to ask candidate Vivek Ramaswamy a question, Pence tried to interject. According to the debate rules, a candidate could have 30 seconds of rebuttal time if his name was mentioned.
"If I may, it was our administration, so I don't know if I get a chance to respond," Pence said.
"Hold on," Baier said, interrupting Pence. "He did not mention you specifically. We will be with you in a second Mr. Vice President."
