NBC News Poll: 8 in 10 Republicans Back Trump's Iran Strikes

By    |   Thursday, 26 June 2025 08:25 AM EDT

Nearly 8 in 10 Republicans said they supported President Donald Trump's decision to order air strikes aimed at Iran's nuclear facilities, according to a new NBC News survey.

Also within the GOP, 60% said they strongly backed Trump's decision.

Not only that, Republicans who said they identified with the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement supported the strikes even more strongly — 84% said they supported the action, with 70% saying they strongly supported the strikes.

Among U.S. adults overall, 38% said they supported the strikes, 45% said they opposed, and 18% said they neither supported nor opposed the strikes, according to the NBC News Decision Desk Poll by SurveyMonkey.

The poll was conducted Monday through Wednesday, when many mainstream media outlets questioned the severity of the damage inflicted by the strikes.

A majority (60%) also said they supported a continuation of military action if Iran's nuclear program remains intact, according to the survey.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe on Wednesday said a body of credible intelligence indicated that Iran's nuclear program was severely damaged by the U.S. strikes last weekend, and that it would take years to be rebuilt.

The NBC News poll found that 77% of Democrats said they opposed the airstrikes, with 61% strongly opposed.

Independents were divided, with 45% saying they opposed the airstrikes, 21% saying they supported the strikes, and 34% saying neither supported nor opposed them.

Regarding future military action, 26% of Americans said the U.S. should consider all options, including the use of ground troops, and 34% said they supported continued military operations only through airstrikes. Another 41% said the U.S. should not take further military action in Iran.

The NBC News survey also found there's a deep concern the conflict could escalate into a broader regional conflict in the Middle East, with 78% saying they are very or somewhat concerned about the conflict escalating. That share includes 55% of Republicans, 83% of independents, and 95% of Democrats.

While 60% of Americans said Trump should have received congressional authorization before launching the strikes, only 19% of Republicans said they agreed.

However, 92% of Democrats and 71% of independents said Trump should have received congressional authorization.

The NBC News Decision Desk Poll powered by SurveyMonkey was conducted online June 23-25 among 5,448 adults ages 18 and over. The margin of error is plus/minus 3.1 percentage points.
