New York City Democrat Mayor Eric Adams congratulated President-elect Donald Trump on his election victory.
During a press conference Wednesday, Adams discussed Tuesday's election results, which included Republican Trump defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in the race for the White House.
"I want to say to our fellow New Yorkers that votes have been counted, and America has elected a new president, incoming President Donald Trump," Adams said. "As Americans, we respect the will of the people and are committed to the peaceful transfer of power.
"I want to congratulate President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and wish them all the best as they work to promote the interests of the American people."
Adams added that while the city respects the right to "peaceful protest, there will be zero tolerance for actions that cross the line."
During an Oct. 27 rally at Madison Square Garden, Trump thanked Adams and added the mayor has been "treated very badly" by the Biden administration's Department of Justice.
Adams was indicted by the DOJ in September on bribery charges, something with which Trump said he could empathize. The former and future president said the DOJ's actions were predictable after the mayor criticized the administration for its lack of help in dealing with the city's illegal immigration problem during the summer of 2023.
"Mayor Adams has been treated pretty badly," Trump said. "When he said this whole thing with the migrants coming into New York, 'This is just not sustainable. We can't do it. We're trying to run the city, we got 100,000 migrants coming. We can't do it.' ... He said it very nicely.
"I said, 'He's going to be indicted by these lunatics.' A year later, he got indicted."
Trump also singled out Adams during the Oct. 17 Al Smith charity dinner in New York.
"Mayor Adams, good luck with everything," Trump said while looking at Adams on the huge dais. "They went after you. They went after you, mayor. Yeah, boy, I knew that 9½ months ago. I said, 'You know, he just said something [bad] about the [Biden-Harris] administration. He's going to be indicted. Any moment.'
"And guess what happened? But you're going to win. I think you're going to win. I know you're going to win. So good luck. Good luck. I don't like what they do."
