AOC Accuses Trump, Republicans of 'Insider Trading'

By    |   Thursday, 10 April 2025 10:50 AM EDT

New York Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez accused President Donald Trump of helping Republicans cash in on his pausing of tariffs.

Trump on Wednesday morning advised everyone that "THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!!" in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.

Later in the day, the president announced a 90-day pause on many of his new tariffs in a shock reversal.

The move sent Wall Street's "Magnificent Seven" stocks surging again and tacking on more than $1.5 trillion in market value overnight. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite Index clocked their biggest daily percentage gains in more than a decade.

Following the market surge, Ocasio-Cortez accused Trump of tipping off fellow Republicans that he planned to pause the tariffs.

"If people are pissed about insider trading here at the House, look at what's happening at the White House right now and with the Republican Party," AOC told Spectrum News' Kevin Frey, who posted a short video of the interview on X.

Frey asked the progressive lawmaker whether she thought Trump "knew what he was doing when he sent out that message about stocks before he made the announcement?"

"It sure seemed like he did," AOC answered. "I don't think that it was a coincidence. I don't think that Trump just coincidentally said 'buy stocks' and then shortly later made an announcement that dramatically inflated and dramatically raised a lot of these asset prices."

Ocasio-Cortez added that she heard "murmurings on the [House] floor that there may have been people that knew this was coming."

"I'm very interested in seeing some of the stock disclosures that come out...when those reports are due," she told Frey while standing outside the Capitol. "And I'm very interested in what members of Congress have been buying and trading stocks in the last 24 hours prior to this tariff announcement."

Democrat Sens. Adam Schiff, D-Calf., and Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., have called for an investigation into the Trump tariff pause and the ensuing stock market rise.
