President Donald Trump and Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden are deadlocked in Iowa, which Trump won by 9 percentage points in the 2016 election, according to the latest poll from The Des Moines Register and Mediacom Iowa.

Both candidates received the same level of support from likely voters in the state, with a small number of voters supporting a third-party candidate, and an even smaller number undecided.

  • 47% support Trump.
  • 47% back Biden.
  • 4% support another candidate.
  • 3% are undecided.

The poll also shows a significant gender divide in the state, with most men in nearly every demographic supporting Trump and most women backing Biden.

  • 57% of men support Trump.
  • 36% back Biden.
  • 37% of women support Trump.
  • 57% back Biden.

“I don’t know that there’s any race in the history of presidential polling in Iowa that shows this kind of division,” said J. Ann Selzer, the president of the firm that conducted the poll, Selzer & Company.

In the 2016 election, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton only won 51% of women, while Trump won 61% of men.

“If Biden wins, it’s because women are steering the ship,” she added, noting that “we've had two polls in a row putting it very, very close. I think all eyes will be on Iowa.”

Selzer & Co. polled 803 voters, including 658 likely voters, in Iowa from September 14-17, 2020, with a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points, and 3.8 percentage points for likely voters.
