On the 4th anniversary of the Jan. 6 incident at the U.S. Capitol, Attorney General Merrick Garland praised the FBI and the Justice Department for charging more than 1,500 people for their involvement in the unrest.
He called the investigations "one of the most complex and most resource-intensive investigations in the Justice Department's history."
"January 6 was a violent attack on the law enforcement officers defending the Capitol, and it was an unprecedented attack on a cornerstone of our system of government — the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to the next," Garland said.
Garland's comments came amid President-elect Donald Trump's vow to pardon those convicted for their role on Jan. 6, claiming the Justice Department was too overbearing in their investigation, The Washington Times reported.
The Justice Department has continued to file charges against those believed in the incident, including charging a man with pushing and obstructing police and another person alleged to have thrust a flagpole at law enforcement, according to the Times.
Last week, Trump ripped President Joe Biden for honoring Jan. 6 House Select Committee chairs Liz Cheney, R-Ariz., and Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., with "fake medals."
"Biden gave Liz Cheney a Medal yesterday, even though she has proven to be totally corrupt. She, 'Bennie' Thompson, and the rest of the Unselect Committee, destroyed and deleted all evidence from their crooked investigation of January 6th," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
