Bernie Sanders: Harris Shifting Ideals 'Pragmatic'

By    |   Sunday, 08 September 2024 06:28 PM EDT

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., defended Vice President Kamala Harris' shifting policy positions as "pragmatic."

Sanders said Harris is "doing what she thinks is right in order to win the election," reported the New York Post.

"I don't think she's abandoning her ideals. I think she's trying to be pragmatic," Sanders told NBC's "Meet the Press."

"My own view is slightly different. I think that in America today there are a lot of people, rural people, working-class people, who no longer believe that the United States Congress and government represents their interests, too dominated by big-money interest," he said.

Among the policies Harris has shifted on: plastic straws, fracking, the decriminalization of illegal border crossings, and softening a push for Medicare for all.

Sanders said despite the shifting tides, he still believes Harris is a progressive.

"I do. Look, she is not where I am ... I do consider her progressive," he said.
