Trump Teases National GOP Convention Prior to Midterms

By    |   Thursday, 28 August 2025 11:38 AM EDT

President Donald Trump has teased a national convention aimed at uniting Republicans prior to the 2026 midterms.

"The Republican Party is doing really well. Millions of people have joined us in our quest to MAKE AMERICA, GREAT AGAIN. We won every aspect of the Presidential Election and, based on the great success we are having, are poised to WIN BIG IN THE MIDTERMS," Trump posted Thursday on his Truth Social platform.

Although Trump's approval rating sits below 45%, according to Nate Silver, and the party in power historically loses congressional seats in midterm elections, even Democrat advisers are warning that the GOP could be "insulated" from any major losses.

"Yet, while the Democrats may do well" in 2026, "it is unlikely that they will have anywhere near the level of success that the out-of-power party has had in previous midterm elections with such an unpopular incumbent president," former Bill Clinton adviser Doug Sosnik wrote for Politico Wednesday.

The president praised his administration's achievements and hinted at bringing the party together in a national forum not typically used outside of presidential election years.

"We have raised far more money than the Democrats, and are having a great time fixing all of the Country Destroying mistakes made by the Biden Administration, and watching the USA heal and prosper. The results are incredible, a record pace!!! In that light, I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before. STAY TUNED!!! DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the president wrote.

Democrats floated the idea of a national convention for their party as well this week to solidify support for their candidates in an effort to retake the House and stifle the remaining two years of Trump's agenda. Redistricting battles by both Democrats and Republicans will further add to the unpredictability heading into 2026.
