Dem Sen. Fetterman: Trump Pardon 'Appropriate'

By    |   Wednesday, 11 December 2024 01:57 PM EST

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., is continuing his march toward the center by posting his first message on Truth Social and calling for President-elect Donald Trump's pardon from his "legal expense" business records conviction in New York.

"My first truth," Fetterman, who has also broken from the progressive left on support for Israel in its war against Hamas, wrote, "The Trump hush money and Hunter Biden cases were both bullsh**, and pardons are appropriate."

"Weaponizing the judiciary for blatant, partisan gain diminishes the collective faith in our institutions and sows further division."

Fetterman appears to be the first Democrat senator to join Trump's Truth Social platform, Politico reported.

Neither President Joe Biden nor Trump can pardon in the New York "legal expense" case where Trump was convicted of felonies for labeling 2017 payments to attorney Michael Cohen for a 2016 nondisclosure agreement with Stormy Daniels a "legal expense."

New York Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul has the authority to pardon Trump in that case, though.

Fetterman's post is a reiteration of his remarks last week to ABC's "The View."

"I think that it's undeniable that the case against Hunter Biden was really politically motivated, but I also think it's true that the trial in New York for Trump was political as well," Fetterman told host Joy Behar.

"In both cases, I think a pardon is appropriate, and I really think, collectively, that America's confidence in these types of institutions has been damaged by these kinds of cases, and we cannot allow these types of institutions to be weaponized against our political opponents."

Biden's presidential primary challenger, Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., also has called on Hochul to "pardon him for the good of the country" in a post earlier this year on X.
