Dem Vindman Wins Open House Seat in Virginia

By    |   Tuesday, 05 November 2024 10:48 PM EST

Democrat Eugene Vindman has succeeded Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., in the state's 7th District, the Hill reports, after beating fellow Army vet Derrick Anderson.

Spanberger vacated her seat in favor of a gubernatorial bid next year.

Vindman helped his twin brother, Alexander Vindman, when he reported the 2019 phone call between President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that led to Trump's first impeachment on charges of abuse of power. Trump calls that whole process a hoax.

Vindman focused his campaign around abortion rights and the threat of MAGA extremism against democracy. The GOP's Anderson pitched himself as the more affable candidate and centered his campaign around the economy.

Republicans represented the district for nearly 50 years until Spanberger, a former intelligence officer, defeated Republican Rep. Dave Brat in 2018.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
