Emerson Poll: Cuomo, Mamdani in Tight Race for NYC Mayor

By    |   Monday, 23 June 2025 02:50 PM EDT

Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani is gaining ground on former Gov. Andrew Cuomo ahead of Tuesday's New York City mayoral primary, according to a new poll.

An Emerson College Polling/PIX 11/The Hill survey has Cuomo leading with 35% and Mamdani in second at 32%.

Mamdani has gained 10 points since last month's Emerson poll, where he polled at 22%. Cuomo has gained one point from 34% to 35% over the same period.

When eight rounds of ranked choice voting are factored in, Mamdani leads Cuomo 52% to 48%. Ranked choice voting lets New Yorkers rank up to five candidates.

Among early voters, Mamdani leads Cuomo 41% to 31%, while Cuomo leads Mamdani with same-day voters 36% to 31%.

Voters under 50 are voting for Mamdani by a 2:1 margin, while Cuomo leads among those ages 50 to 59, 63% to 37%, and voters over 60, 56% to 44%.

Cuomo leads overwhelmingly with Black and Hispanic voters, while Mamdani has broad support with white and Asian voters.

Men support Mamdani 56% to 44%, while women lead toward Cuomo 52% to 48%.

The poll was conducted June 18-20. The sample includes 833 likely voters and those who have already voted early with a margin of error of ±3.3%. The margin of error was slightly higher among smaller subsamples of respondents.
