Those Accusing Gaetz Should Have Begun with Themselves

presidential and media and congressional politics in a presidential election year

Much like the Biblical Salome’s Dance of the 7 Veils before King Herod Antipas, resulting in the unspeakable beheading of John the Baptist, we’ve been hearing about alleged improprieties regarding Fmr. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., for a long time.

Ever since he led the charge to successfully topple then-House Speaker Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., he’s faced political enemies relentlessly.

No matter that McCarthy is now in the rear-view window, the vengeance is still real.

It doesn’t matter whether the allegations are true or not, to my way of thinking.

I've been a criminal defense attorney for over 30 years, licensed in Maryland and D.C.

I’ve represented 8-year-olds charged with rape, arsonists, drug dealers, someone who stabbed his 9-month pregnant girlfriend in the stomach.

I’ve learned to make up my own mind as who should be my friend and of whom I must be wary. The titles, status, and public opinion of others doesn't sway me in the least.

If the allegations which we lodged against Gaetz are wholly or even partially false, it will be a shame and a loss for the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement if he’s forced retire his legislative talent in podcasting.

I’m certain this moment has been a personal strain for him and his family.

I saw this happen with my beloved late father.

Gone for 20 years this past Jan. 6!

Most everyone who ever met him invariably used the term "prince" to describe him.

He was generous, loyal, brilliant, and compassionate. Years ago, there were a few people who saw a business or social opportunity in spreading lies against him. When I stood by his side, they did the same with me. I learned a life lesson, but it left a hole in his heart that could not be filled.

Gaetz has no doubt already taken a personal beating in his life.

Conversely, what if the allegations against him are true or partially true?

Are you a person who throws people out of your life if they aren’t perfect.

My late lawyer and friend had a brilliant son, David, who --- unlike Hunter Biden --- had the savvy, smarts, as well as charm and athletic ability to have been president if he had wanted.

"Central casting," as Trump would put it.

My pal was quite successful and would’ve paid for Harvard, Wharton, Culinary Institute, Oxford --- wherever his son’s talents would have taken him.

He had the IQ and the EQ.

But instead, he became a heroin addict.

Though my pal was wary, I became friends with David, too.

He explained about scams criminals do for cash, drug lyrics in songs, local legal and political gossip.

David had his dad move me and my scruffy dog into the family home when my air-conditioning went bust, made sure my dad and I were invited for Rosh Hashana dinner.

He showed how people count cards in Atlantic City and could point out the New York women in any room, "It’s the makeup they do."

Sadly and quite predictably, David died very young of an overdose, but my life is the richer for having known him.

I don’t let other people pick my friends and the people I admire.

Neither should you.

Matt Gaetz has an important voice and an unparallel strength, machismo.

Who would you want defending your honor and interests in court: Gaetz or current U.S. House Speaker Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La.?

Some people may think it inappropriate to compartmentalize like I do.

But we must focus on what this country needs now.

My grandfather had a saying gleaned from an old advertisement, "Brother, as you walk in life, whatever be your goal, keep your eye upon the donut and not upon the hole!"

There is a movement afoot for Matt Gaetz to take his duly elected seat in the next Congress. He’s the right person at the right time: we need unabashed, unafraid, and sharp advocacy in the House to help support President Donald J. Trump when he takes his Oath of Office.
