Tom Holland on Sobriety Journey: I Leaned on Close Ones

By    |   Friday, 03 January 2025 12:32 PM EST

Tom Holland is now more than two years sober and is opening up about his journey.

Speaking with Men's Health in an interview published Thursday, the "Spider-Man" star recalled the early days of giving up alcohol.

"I'm quite strong-willed. When I decide to do something, I'm really gonna do it," he told the publication. "I leaned on close ones a lot: family, friends, old colleagues, new colleagues, people that reached out that I didn't know who also were sober."

Holland also recalled the support he received from his lawyer at the time, who offered "a really poignant piece of advice that helped me get through everything."

That insight was that "you'll never wake up the morning after a night out and wish you had a drink," Holland said. "That piece of advice really rang true to me because my problem was that I would have one drink and be fine, and then I would just go too far."

Holland also spoke candidly about his experience on the set of the 2022 TV series "The Crowded Room," on which he starred alongside Amanda Seyfried and Emmy Rossum.

"There was quite a lot of animosity on that set. It was not a very harmonious place, and there was a lot of arguing and butting heads," Holland said. The tension, he added, was not related to creative differences, although he refrained from elaborating further. Reflecting on the experience, Holland recalled thinking to himself, "If I start drinking again now, with all this going on, it's gonna get worse, right?"

Holland previously spoke about working on the project, which he told Entertainment Weekly made him reflect on the way he views his mental health. Holland plays the role of Danny Sullivan in the Apple TV+ production, which is based on the 1981 book "The Minds of Billy Milligan." Milligan was arrested in the 1970s for raping three women at Ohio State University. He pleaded insanity.

Holland told Entertainment Weekly that the "mental aspect" of playing Sullivan "really beat me up," adding that it took him "a long time" to recover.

"I was seeing myself in him, but in my personal life, I remember having a bit of a meltdown at home and thinking, like, 'I'm going to shave my head. I need to shave my head because I need to get rid of this character,'" Holland said.

"And, obviously, we were mid-shooting, so I decided not to. It was unlike anything I've ever experienced before."

Holland also said that "learning about mental health" while working on "The Crowded Room" "has been so informative to my own life." Interacting with psychiatrists to better understand his character has helped Holland in "recognizing triggers" and "things that stress me out," like social media.
