Baseball Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson, the only player to steal over 1,000 bases in his career, died Friday at age 65.
Bob Kendrick, the president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, confirmed the news on X: "Saddened by the passing of our friend, Rickey Henderson, the greatest leadoff hitter in MLB history! Condolences to his family, friends, and legion of fans!"
Dave Winfield, Hall of Famer and Henderson's former teammate, posted on Instagram honoring his longtime friend: "I still cannot believe I've lost one of my favorite teammates and great friend Rickey Henderson. Rest in peace."
Henderson, who starred with the A's, Yankees, Blue Jays, Mets, Padres, and others, died after a bout with pneumonia, reports TMZ.
He retired in 2003 as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers with 3,055 hits, 297 home runs and a .279 batting average. He also holds the all-time record for runs scored with 2,295.
