Bob Odenkirk Learns He Is Related to King Charles: 'That Is Crazy'

Bob Odenkirk could not contain his laughter after learning that he is a distant relation of King Charles III.

The "Better Call Saul" star, 61, was told of his royal connection on a new episode of "Finding Your Roots," shortly after dismissing the monarchy as "a little twisted," according to the Independent.

"That is crazy," he said with a laugh.

The topic was raised by host Henry Louis Gates Jr., who revealed to the actor that he was related to royalty on his father's side.

Odenkirk shared that he didn't know much about his father's family history because his father left when he was 15.

When Gates informed Odenkirk that his father's fifth great-grandfather was born to Maria Catharina Bein and the Duke of Plön out of wedlock, the actor casually revealed his indifferent view on the monarchy.

"I'm an American. I'm not a monarchist. I don't believe in, uh, that," Odenkirk told Gates.

"You know, I feel like it's a little twisted. I understand why society built itself around monarchs and leaders, and they passed them down through generations," he continued.

Odenkirk added that while he recognizes the historical existence of royalty worldwide, he believes that society has evolved towards a more democratic state.

"I understand that goes through every society, every civilization. But I think that we've gotten to a better place with democracy and we should keep going down that road," he added.

It was at that point that Gates informed Odenkirk that he and Charles are 11th cousins, connecting them to the British king through the Duke of Plön.

"Well maybe I'll change my mind on that," Odenkirk said about his previous remarks.

Earlier this month, "Better Call Saul" set a record at the Emmys as the show most nominated to never secure a trophy in the awards show's history, with a total of 53 nods.

Odenkirk, known for portraying the main character, received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. However, Kieran Culkin secured the win for his portrayal of Roman Roy in the concluding season of "Succession."

As "Better Call Saul" wrapped up its sixth season in August 2022, this marked its last opportunity for recognition at the television awards ceremony.
