Halsey has apologized for posting an Instagram photo of when she used to suffer from an eating disorder. On Sunday the singer participated in a "post a photo of" trend and, when asked by one of her followers to share an image of herself at her "lowest point," posted a topless mirror selfie to her Instagram stories.
In the image, which was revealed by Page Six, the "Bad At Love" hitmaker looks extremely thin. Her rib cage is showing and her hip bones are jutting out. "TW: ED ask for help" she wrote. "TW" refers to trigger warning and "ED" refers to eating disorder.
On Monday, Halsey issued an apology for not warning her followers that the content could be triggering. "TW: disordered eating I am very sorry for posting a photo of myself depicting my struggle with ED without a sufficient trigger warning," she tweeted. "I was very nervous to post it and didn’t think properly. I had positive intentions. I would never want to harm someone who shares my struggle."
In a follow-up tweet, Halsey said she would be taking a break from social media.
"with that being said im gonna log off now because this has turned into something I am not emotionally equipped to handle for the time being. I hope that’s okay," she wrote.
Halsey has been vocal about her past struggles, not just with eating disorders but with bipolar disorder and homelessness. Speaking at the Ending Youth Homelessness: A Benefit for My Friend's Place Gala in Los Angeles last year, the pop icon admitted she almost resorted to prostitution when she was broke and had nowhere to live.
"It wasn't because something was wrong with me, and it wasn't because my parents didn't love me — because they did very much," she said, according to Fox News. "But a series of unfortunate circumstances led me to be in that position, and it can happen to absolutely anyone."
Halsey's luck changed when her music career took off.
"That’s why I tour so much. I release endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine," she told Marie Claire of her bipolar disorder in 2018. "Like, it’s literally a drug response. I don’t manage my mental illness to keep up with my lifestyle; I manage my lifestyle to keep up with my mental illness."
