Jim Carrey is quitting his political cartoons. The actor launched his pet project a few years ago and would often tweet his artwork with captions attacking former President Donald Trump's administration and supporters, but now that Trump is no longer president, Carrey has decided to end his "quest to rid our democracy of 'Orange Julius Caesar' and his Empire of Lies."
The "Dumb and Dumber" star made his announcement Saturday in a statement shared on Twitter.
"For the past 4 yrs, among other commitments, I put considerable effort into this collection of political protest cartoons. It truly feels as though you and I have crossed an ocean of outrage together. But something tells me it's time to rest my social media gavel," Carrey wrote.
"I just assumed that a radicalized America is a threat to us all. When a madman grabs the wheel of the bus loaded with innocent passengers and threatens to drive it off a cliff, it tend to steal everyone's focus," he added.
"You always have and always will occupy a sacred space in my grateful heart," Carrey wrote to his fans. "Thank You All kindly for your patience, your support, your humor, and your b.e.a. utiful fanart."
In the tweet, Carrey included his final cartoon — an image of himself standing in front of a door with his arms spread open with the caption: "...in case I don't see ya'..."
In 2018, Carrey opened up about his artwork and caricatures of Trump during a Television Critics Association panel for his Showtime comedy "Kidding."
"It's not a choice to be doing the cartoons. I'm doing [them] because I can't just watch this nightmare unfold," he said, according to USA Today.
Carrey added that his artwork was a "reflex to what I'm seeing. It's just a civilized way of dealing with it, to get on board with as many other voices as possible that are shouting from the rooftops."
