Rapper Kanye West and his wife, Bianca Censori, might have jeopardized a $20 million international concert deal after their controversial appearance at the 67th Grammy Awards on Sunday.
West, 47, had secured a contract to perform twice at the Tokyo Dome in May. However, after Censori arrived on the red carpet wearing a transparent outfit, their appearance drew backlash. Now, the financial backers of the deal are reportedly reconsidering their involvement, according to the Daily Mail.
"The investors in Japan who are backing the concerts are extremely upset by this. It is highly likely that they will pull the funding for the shows," a source told the outlet, saying the stunt "has been greeted with horror in Japan."
The insider explained that Japan is experiencing "a cultural awakening about women's rights," noting that "what he did is being seen as an act of coercive control, which is utterly unacceptable."
"He has completely culturally misjudged Japan," the source continued. "He has greatly misjudged the tolerance of the Japanese people toward these activities. He's just not welcome anymore,” the source said, adding that it was "creepy beyond belief."
The ordeal, the source added, " will be a big blow for him [West] because he has been living in Japan for around a year now, almost full time, and I guess he did not see this coming.”
The source further revealed that West, who was married to Kim Kardashian from 2014-22, and who is a father of four, has been living in a Tokyo hotel for several months.
It appears as if financial backers in the U.S. are also reacting similarly. As a source noted, the couple's red carpet stunt took place directly in front of a billboard requesting charitable donations for the Los Angeles fires.
"This was totally disrespectful to the Grammys," one insider told the outlet. "To pull a stunt at what is essentially a fundraiser and in the context of what has been going on in LA is almost inconceivably stupid, crass, and wrong."
Censori, 30, arrived at the Grammys and promptly removed a black coat in front of dozens of cameras, revealing a sheer, minimal mini-dress worn without a bra or underwear. West later bragged on social media that "Censori was "the most Googled Person" on Earth, adding on Instagram, "We beat the Grammies," according to Vibe.
