Margaret Thatcher Dies: Ugly Backlash on Twitter From Her Critics

The death of Margaret Thatcher, Britain's first female prime minister, led to an outpouring of online support from her fans but some ugly backlash from her critics who criticized the Iron Lady's right-wing policies.

Thatcher, who suffered multiple health problems in recent years, died Monday following a stroke. She was 87.

Divisive in her politics, Thatcher was credited with transforming Great Britain's economy into a global powerhouse as its prime minister from 1979 to 1990; She successfully privatized big chunks of the economic industry from the state's hands.

A "political soul mate" of Ronald Reagan's, Thatcher was strongly against Communism and in favor of small government.

But her critics accused her of cementing a divide between the rich and the poor, and condemned her policies, which largely destroyed industries such as mining.

It was those critics who abusively bashed Thatcher online as news of her death broke.

"She was England's Hitler," one poster, Maidinchina, commented on the Guardian's website.

"DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD. HUZZAR!" another said.

"I put a bottle of something very decent in my fridge the last time she was threatening to croak — will open it with dinner tonight!" user rcourt13864 posted. "Typical of the old b**** not to die on a weekend — then I could really go and get hammered!"

Others flooded Twitter with vile comments.
