Priscilla Presley said she learned about her then-husband Elvis Presley's affairs by reading fan mail sent to their home.
During a panel at MegaCon Orlando on Friday, Priscilla, 79, shared that it was challenging to navigate a marriage overshadowed by fame, especially one where her husband was always surrounded by others.
"It was hard, you know, to get used to all the guys, not just Elvis but all the guys, they were like this, and I love them all, but it was a man's world, and I was really the only woman," she said, according to People.
Placing further strain on their relationship after their 1967 marriage was Elvis' intense touring schedule.
"He was gone a lot … and I would hear stories, and the thing that did it for me was we had a home in Palm Springs, and … I decided to go up and check the mail and make sure the house was OK," Priscilla explained, adding that she looked through the mail.
"A lot of it was like, 'Oh Elvis, thank you for the invite. Charlie Hodge [Elvis' best friend and confidante] asked me to come up, and I'm so glad you … greeted me and my girlfriends,'" she said.
Other letters, however, were more explicit.
"'Elvis, I had the best night with you. Thank you so much,'" Priscilla said, adding that she thought, "Hello, it's getting worse," as she continued to read.
"I decided, Gosh, he's living another life, and and I just couldn't take it. Every time he'd go to Vegas or even Palm Springs, it was … difficult."
Although they had their struggles, Priscilla said that their marriage ended "lovingly" in 1973, and they maintained a close friendship.
"He was famous, he was loving, he was a beautiful, beautiful man, [but] I just couldn't take it. It just was not a good life for me," she said.
"We still … kept our relationship. We did. He would drop by my home unannounced, and I was going with someone by the way, and he would come unannounced," she added. "Thank God it was 2:00 in the morning, and I knew who it was, so I quickly tried to get to the door before he rang the doorbell, and of course, he came in, we went in the kitchen, we talked for a couple of hours."
Priscilla has been open about her relationship with Elvis in the past, previously sharing that he was "very, very lonely" in the early days of their relationship. Appearing at a Venice Film Festival press conference ahead of the debut screening of Sofia Coppola's new biopic, "Priscilla" in 2023, she also spoke of their connection.
"It was very difficult for my parents to understand that Elvis would be so interested in me and why," Priscilla said, according to Entertainment Tonight.
She went on to explain that she was the "listener" in their relationship.
"Elvis would pour his heart out for me," she said. "His fears, his hopes, the loss of his mother, which he never, ever got over. And I really sat there to listen and to comfort him. That was really our connection."
