Every parent fears losing a child but for national radio host Delilah, this became a reality when she lost two of her sons in just a few years. Her millions of listeners know Delilah Rene for her sunny voice and words of inspiration, but off the air the 59-year-old has faced unimaginable tragedy. Speaking with Fox News, Delilah opened up about her past and how her faith gave her the strength to survive.
She was in her 20s when her brother and his wife died and her husband left her. Weeks later, Delilah lost her job. It was during this time that she first found her faith and this is what kept her going years later, when her 16-year-old son Sammy died from complications that arose from sickle cell anemia. Her 18-year-old son Zack took his own life five years later in 2017.
"There is a verse that says, 'Every one of our days is numbered before a single one comes to pass.' That one verse has saved my sanity because all of my sons' days were numbered," she told Fox News. "God knew when they were going to leave this Earth before they came to this Earth, and knowing that changes everything. Because if I didn't believe that, then I would do the what-ifs. What if I had done this differently? What if I had done that differently?"
Delilah said she would have driven herself insane thinking about all those what-ifs, but she now realizes that she did the best she could with the information she had. And rather than live in the past, her focus now is to be the best mother possible to her 14 children back home at their 55-acre farm in Port Orchard, Washington.
"All of our days are numbered. God already knows when he's going to call me home," Delilah continued. "So while I have today, while he's given me this 24 hours, I can spend it mourning and depressed over what I've lost or I can spend it rejoicing in children who still need me, who still need their mom to be fully present. So, I choose life. I choose joy. I choose to invest my energies into those people that God has in my life today."
