The American Jewish Committee praised Cardinal Timothy Dolan on Thursday as the Archdiocese of New York announced a leadership transition, thanking him for what it called "exemplary leadership" and a "deep commitment to strong Catholic-Jewish relations," while saying it looks forward to working with Archbishop-designate Ronald Hicks.
"On this day of announced leadership transition in the Archdiocese of New York (@NY_Arch) we are filled with gratitude and anticipation. We thank our dear friend @CardinalDolan for his exemplary leadership and his deep commitment to strong Catholic–Jewish relations," the committee posted on X.
In its statement, AJC highlighted New York's role as home to the largest Jewish community outside Israel and pointed to the "spirit of Nostra Aetate," the landmark Second Vatican Council declaration that reshaped Catholic relations with non-Christian religions and is marking its 60th anniversary.
Cardinal Dolan, who has led the Archdiocese of New York since 2009, submitted his required retirement letter after turning 75 on Feb. 6, 2025, according to the archdiocese.
The Archdiocese of New York said Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Hicks, 58, the bishop of Joliet since 2020, as the next archbishop. The archdiocese said Dolan will remain apostolic administrator until Hicks' installation at St. Patrick's Cathedral on Feb. 6, 2026.
