Bible sales in America skyrocketed following the Sept. 10 murder of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk.
Data from Circana BookScan showed that 2.4 million Bibles were sold nationwide in September, a 36% increase from the same month last year, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The surge marked the highest monthly total in 2025. Brenna Connor, an analyst with Circana, said that in times of violence, political tension, and uncertainty, people often seek comfort and direction through faith.
Through the first nine months of 2025, Bible sales rose 11% over the same period in 2024, while overall U.S. print book sales slipped by 1%, according to the Journal. Analysts described the spike as a reaction to national turmoil and a reflection of renewed interest in religion.
Charlie Kirk was assassinated by a shooter while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem. Known for his Christian beliefs, Kirk often linked America's moral strength to its religious roots.
His widow, Erika Kirk, told mourners at his Sept. 21 memorial that his death inspired a nationwide return to faith.
"After Charlie's assassination, we didn't see violence or riots," she said. "We saw revival. People opened a Bible for the first time in years, prayed again, and went to church for the first time in their lives."
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said at the memorial that Charlie Kirk's killing sparked "a spiritual revival" across the country.
"Charlie started a political movement but unleashed a spiritual revival," he said. "This moment is the turning point for the USA."
Mark Schoenwald, CEO of HarperCollins Christian Publishing, told the Journal that while Bible sales had remained strong for two years, Charlie Kirk's assassination "awakened a lot of people" and encouraged self-reflection about faith.
James Borrero, who owns Cornerstone Christian Bookstore in Vineland, New Jersey, said sales of Bibles and other Christian items have surged since Charlie Kirk's death.
Recent surveys show that Christianity remains the dominant faith in the U.S., with two-thirds of Americans identifying as Christian, according to Pew Research Center and Gallup data.
President Donald Trump posthumously awarded Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, calling him "a fearless warrior for liberty."
