Poll: Majority Want Social Media Banned for Children

By    |   Wednesday, 18 December 2024 04:14 PM EST

A majority of U.S. voters, 59%, said social media should be banned for children under 16 years old, according to a Quinnipiac poll.

The poll comes in the wake of a law passed in Australia that banned children under 16 from accessing Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, X, and Reddit.

The poll found 31% of respondents were opposed to the law. Voters ages 18 to 34 were the most split on the law, with 50% in support and 46% opposed.

"The ban from Down Under gets a big thumbs-up from the other side of the Pacific, as Americans say the Aussies got it right when it comes to handling concerns about social media and kids," Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy said.

The Quinnipiac University poll was conducted Dec. 12-16 among 924 self-identified registered voters nationwide. The margin of error was ±3.2 percentage points.
