Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss got into a tense conversation with Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino on Wednesday as the Trump administration continues its crackdown on illegal immigration in the Chicago suburbs of Illinios.
Video that spread rapidly on social media showed Bovino and other federal agents in the northern Chicago suburb as Biss and Bovino engaged in a close exchange.
Biss scolded Bovino over a list of actions he found "unacceptable" by federal agents, including alleged "violence." Bovino responded that he was there to make his city "safe."
Bovino later took to social media to express gratitude to the Chicago and Evanston police departments for their support in "protecting law enforcement officers from violent mobs while Title 8 immigration enforcement operations were carried out in the area."
"I told the mayor that we were there to make his city a safer place through Title 8 immigration enforcement and how these enforcement operations work," Bovino posted on X following the encounter.
"Although he fell back into the divisive talking points that we've heard ad nauseam from politicians in Chicago, I hope it was enlightening to him," Bovino wrote.
"I always enjoy meeting and talking with such officials and today was no exception!!!"
"Perhaps the mayor will see the light as we continue to remove bad people from Evanston. Excellent day in Evanston!" he added.
In response, Biss posted his own version of the events saying he "confronted" Bovino, but federal agents will "continue to terrorize our communities."
"We need rapid responders out immediately with whistles ready to warn our neighbors. We must keep each other safe," he added.
Biss, a Democrat, previously served in the Illinois Legislature and is now campaigning to succeed Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., as the representative for Illinois' 9th Congressional District.
