President Donald Trump trolled former President Joe Biden for appearing virtually at the dueling national prayer breakfast events in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, saying he is also going to bring back the formerly obligatory Super Bowl Sunday interview.
"It's nice to once again have a president that shows up to the prayer breakfast," Trump told the second private event at a D.C. hotel after delivering a Capitol Hill address nearby, adding "and that agrees to be interviewed for the Super Bowl. I'm doing that, too."
"They ask a question, and you give them an answer: It's not that hard," Trump said of the Super Bowl Sunday interview that Biden skipped last year.
Trump appeared live at both events Thursday.
"I've been there every year," Trump said at the second, private one. "I'm not doing it via Skype.
"I want to be here with you, and I have been here with you."
Trump joked "I do it despite the fact they say I can't run again," making a tongue-in-cheek suggestion he might seek to find a way to running for a third term.
"I've actually met some very nice Democrats here," Trump joked to a smattering of laughs.
Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first president to attend the prayer breakfast, in February 1953, and every president since has spoken at the gathering.
In 2023, the National Prayer Breakfast split into two dueling events, the one on Capitol Hill largely attended by lawmakers and government officials and a larger private event for thousands at a hotel ballroom.
The split occurred when lawmakers sought to distance themselves from the private religious group that for decades had overseen the bigger event, due to questions about its organization and how it was funded.
In 2023 and 2024, Biden spoke at the Capitol Hill event, and his remarks were livestreamed to the other gathering.
