The FBI has discovered 2,400 documents related to the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy, Axios first reported.
The secret documents under review, among 14,000 pages discovered in a review prompted by an executive order, could shed light on a lawsuit filed by the Mary Ferrell Foundation against the Biden administration in 2022. The lawsuit alleges that federal authorities were not turning over documents to the National Archives.
Such documents include:
- The sealed jailhouse recordings of the New Orleans' Mafia boss, Carlos Marcello, who claimed he was involved in the assassination.
- The CIA files of George Joannides of the CIA station in Miami.
- Missing Church Committee records.
- Missing attachments to assassination records.
The development came after President Donald Trump ordered the release of the records. However, sources told Axios that intelligence agencies are still recommending redactions to the files.
"When POTUS hears about this stonewalling, he's gonna hit the roof," one White House official said.
"This is total Deep State bulls***," another added.
"Don't be surprised if all these records just suddenly wind up online," an adviser to Trump said. "He wants to move on and call this a promise kept."
Jefferson Morley, the vice president of the Mary Ferrell Foundation, called the development "huge," adding, "It shows the FBI is taking this seriously."
"The FBI is finally saying, 'Let's respond to the president's order,' instead of keeping the secrecy going."
