Georgia voters prefer former President Donald Trump by 8 percentage points over President Joe Biden in a hypothetical head-to-head 2024 election matchup, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's latest poll.
Trump earns 45% support to Biden's 37% in the crucial battleground state, AJC poll results released Tuesday revealed.
Georgian Bob Monett, 75, told the newspaper he would be the first to admit Trump is "rough around the edges," but he worries Biden is viewed as weak on the world stage and the former president is "what we need to protect our interest."
Biden won previously red Georgia and its 16 electoral vote by less than 12,000 votes en route to capturing the general election in 2020.
The AJC reported Biden is hurt by soft support among many Democrat and independent voters, including 10% of Black voters who say they do not plan to vote at all in this year's race for the White House.
Those voters were crucial to his narrow 2020 victory in Georgia.
Biden's problems in the state are compounded by his low job approval ratings.
The latest ABC News/Ipsos poll found Biden's approval rating is 33%, the lowest since then-President George W. Bush in 2006-2008. Biden also has a 58% disapproval rating.
In Georgia, about 62% of registered voters are critical of the president's job performance, and a slim majority say they "strongly disapprove," the AJC reported.
Among the state's independents, Biden receives 54% disapproval and 37% approval.
Among Black voters, 45.5% approve of the job Biden is doing, and 44.1% disapprove.
The newspaper's survey results were reported the morning Trump took a landslide victory in the Iowa caucuses, which kicked off the GOP primary season.
The AJC poll also found one-fifth of Republican voters say they do not plan on supporting Trump, or they are undecided.
Overall, 6% of Georgia voters are undecided, 6% say they will not vote, and 7% say they will vote for a third-party candidate.
A total of 73% of Georgia voters say the U.S. is headed down the "wrong track" while only 15.9% say the country is going in the right direction.
Two months ago, the AJC's poll showed Trump and Biden statistically tied, with Trump at 45% and Biden at 44%. However, that survey only involved likely voters and would not have captured Georgians who said they do not plan to vote this year.
The newspaper's latest poll was conducted Jan. 3-11 and involved 1,007 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
