More than two-thirds of Republican voters support President-elect Donald Trump's suggestion the U.S. acquire Greenland and/or the Panama Canal, according to a new Rasmussen Reports survey.

Overall, 44% of likely voters say they support Trump's idea that the U.S. should acquire Greenland as a purchase in our national interest. That included 25% who say they strongly support the idea.

A share of 51% self-identified conservative voters say they strongly support the U.S. taking back the Panama Canal, while 70% of liberals say they strongly oppose the notion.

Voters ages 65 and older are likelier than younger voters to support the U.S. taking back the canal. The older age group may recall the unpopular 1977 deal in which President Jimmy Carter gave away the Panama Canal.

The Rasmussen survey was conducted Jan. 8, 9, and 12 among 1,211 likely voters. Its margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
