'Small Nodule' Found in Joe Biden's Prostate

A small nodule was found in former President Joe Biden's prostate during a routine physical exam, according to multiple reports.

Biden, 82, spent Friday at a hospital in Philadelphia after a "small nodule" required "further evaluation," The New York Times reported.

A "small nodule" can mean various things and will require further testing to understand the underlying cause, ABC News reported. It could be a benign lump or something more serious.

The Times added that its common for a man of Biden's age to experience prostate issues.

In 2021, the latest year for which data is available, 236,659 new cases of prostate cancer were reported, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It was the most common of all cancers diagnosed in men that year.

In February 2023, then-President Biden had a lesion removed from his chest that was cancerous, ABC News reported. Before entering office, Biden had several non-melanoma skin cancers removed with Mohs surgery.

"As expected, the biopsy confirmed that the small lesion was basal cell carcinoma," White House physician Dr. Kevin O'Connor said at the time. "All cancerous tissue was successfully removed... No further treatment is required.

"Basal cell carcinoma lesions do not tend to 'spread' or metastasize, as some more serious skin cancers such as melanoma or squamous cell carcinoma are known to do. They do, however, have the potential to increase in size, resulting in a more significant issue as well as increased challenges for surgical removal."

Throughout his presidency, Biden was dogged by concerns about his age and his health. He ultimately stepped down as the Democratic Party's presidential nominee last year after a disastrous debate performance that raised questions about his mental acuity.

Biden, who left office as the oldest serving president in American history, sat for two interviews last week after having kept a relatively low profile since leaving office in January.
